Custer Bison Center

The Custer State Park Bison Center is a unique timber-frame structure located across from the Park’s buffalo corrals. The project began in the summer of 2021 and was completed in the spring of 2022. The building consists of approximately 5,000 sf with the main feature being a vaulted display room. There is also a concession/gift area, restrooms, a staff break room, and mechanical/electrical rooms.

Floyd Fitzgerald Stadium

The Fitzgerald Stadium involved demolition and renovation across 215,000sf existing stadium. We constructed 4 new buildings along with a new synthetic turf/underdrainage system on the field. The new facility is now ADA, compliant with modern, attractive features. From a cost savings perspective, MAC helped Value Engineer over $550,000 in savings! Those savings were critical to get the project within budget while providing all the necessary functions. The project was completed safely, on time, and within budget.

Old Stoney

Built in the early 1920's out of hand-cut sandstone from a nearby quarry, Old Stoney was and still is Crook County's tallest building. In 2018, MAC Construction was awarded the Phase 1 construction contract. One of the most challenging parts of this project was installing the new elevator; specifically, the elevator shaft itself. Due to groundwater, soil conditions, and the interior location of the elevator, the shaft was poured into sections and had to be poured from the top down, from the basement to the sub-basement. Working directly underneath a load-bearing stone foundation wall which lined up with one side of the elevator shaft, MAC began the work of pouring, then excavating, then pouring below that, and excavating again, until we were finally able to pour the elevator pit slab at the bottom.

The Deadwood Arch

The Deadwood Arches were a unique and fun project.  The cedar columns for the main structure are 22’ tall, and 16” square.  The rolled steel for the arch is an ellipse shape and took a precise planning to notch into the cedar columns without large gaps.  The one-of-a-kind six-shooter designs in the sheet steel at the ellipse were created using a special water-jet process and were created in the cedar column using a sand-blasting process.

RC Airport – Circulation

Major highlights of the demolition scope for the RCRA - Circulation included removal of two escalators, removal of an existing elevator and concrete shaft, demo of multiple concrete beams within the building footprint, demo and removal of existing concrete slabs and footings, demo of precast concrete roofing, and demo of elevated slab on deck. Due to the phasing of the project, demolition often took place directly adjacent to new equipment or near publicly accessible areas. Furthermore, critical demolition scopes often took place overnight. Overall, the project was completed safely, and the facility remained operable throughout the duration.

The Gap

The existing Landstrom's building was restored to include multiple tenant spaces including Dunn Brothers Coffee, Prouty Pottery, Betty's Quiltery, Dakota Point Brewing and numerous other future tenant build-out spaces. The previously unoccupied building required extensive modifications to accommodate the needs of the new occupants. Along with the complete renovation to the original Landstrom's building, MAC constructed an addition to the building that became the Dunn Brothers Coffee space on the main floor as well as additional office space above.

Jewel Cave

Nearly all the ~60 CY of concrete for this project was mixed by hand and carried (1-2 cubic feet at a time) through the cave, up and down hundreds of stairs. There was nearly 1/2 mile of trail that was improved with all temporary and permanent material transported by hand in and out of the cave with electric dollies. Dave Alden, owner of BH Metal Works, built custom metal containers to keep concrete safely contained and carried using hand carts and assisted with in-cave steel work. Difficult access, remote work, numerous unique site conditions, sensitive surroundings were just some of the things we faced in this project. Wiring and devices had to be installed in a way that would not detract but complement natural cave features. All the handrails had to be measured, then custom fabricated to ensure the right angles and lengths. After fabrication, the handrails were carried by hand into the cave and installed.
